Evolution in the deep-sea: systematics and speciation

of the gastropod genus Scaphander

Scaphander are deep-sea bubble-shell cephalaspidean gastropods occurring worldwide. Several studies have been recently published about the diversification of shallow-water faunas, but little is know about the origin of species in the deep-sea. In this project the genus Scaphander is used as a model to understand the biogeography and drivers of speciation in deep-sea ecosystems. First, the systematics of the group will be revised through molecular sequencing, shells and anatomical characters and a phylogenetic hypothesis established.
